AREVA T&D wins the largest high-voltage gas-insulated contract ever awarded in Oman

November 10, 2004
AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) division has just won an unprecedented contract in Oman for the supply of high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear. The 18-million USD contract is with the Bahwan Engineering Company, subcontracted by Oman’s Ministry of Housing, Electricity & Water (MHEW), to build and install three 220 kV substations.

Oman has undergone important economic and demographic growth, resulting in an increasing demand in energy, to which the MEHW is responding by boosting its energy production with the construction of a new power plant. The three substations will integrate the new plant into the national power grid and will ensure that the electricity generated is safely and efficiently delivered across the country. They will also contribute to Oman’s high-voltage grid expansion project, in preparation for its interconnection with neighboring gulf country council countries.

The first substation will be installed in the Sohar power plant, currently under construction in northern Oman. The second substation, which will act as a central node for all future interconnections between the country’s regional grids, will be located just a few kilometers away. The third substation will be situated in the city of Maludha, forty kilometers away from Sohar.

Altogether, AREVA T&D will supply thirty-two bays of its B105 gas-insulated circuit breakers manufactured in its French factory in Aix-les-Bains.

The first two substations will be operational within fourteen months and the third within twenty-four months.

Marco Graziano, Vice-President for Areva T&D in the region, said: “I am convinced that AREVA T&D won the largest gas-insulated project ever awarded in Oman thanks to the superior design and commercial competitiveness of our B105-type 220 kV circuit breakers. This prestigious contract confirms once again AREVA T&D’s leading position in Oman’s high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear market and in the Gulf countries as a whole.”
