AREVA T&D partners with top Chinese universities in R&D

March 13, 2008
AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution Division (AREVA T&D) recently announced R&D collaboration with two leading universities in China, namely Xi’an Jiaotong University and Beijing Jiaotong University. Andrew Klimek, R&D Director of AREVA T&D Automation, and appointed Adjunct and Advisory Professor at both Universities, headed the AREVA delegation. Heads of Universities along with Faculty attended the opening ceremonies, which also included lectures by Prof. Klimek. The cooperation aims to develop new technology in automation of high voltage direct current and AC power system for China’s electric industry.  The two areas have demonstrated good growth potential.

As a Fortune 500 company based in France, AREVA is the world leader in nuclear power generation committed to providing customers with safe, reliable and CO2-free power along with electricity transmission and distribution solutions.  The collaborative R&D project with Xi’an Jiaotong University will focus on “WAMS based Operation Control and Protection Strategies of Large Power Systems with HVDC 800 kV and AC 1000 kV Interconnections in China”.

The successful outcome of the research project will utilize the advanced measurement and communication technology of the wide-area monitoring system to provide new ways to detect and control the emergency status of UHV power transmission systems and to improve the robustness of security protection system with respect to the contingency and the operation efficiency of the systems.

The research collaboration with Beijing Jiaotong University will focus on new protection solutions for railway traction systems and power transformers. The transient behaviours of the railway traction and power transformer systems are to be accurately modelled and simulated leading to development of advanced algorithms that increase reliability and safety of traction power system.

Satrijo Tanudjojo, Regional Vice President of AREVA T&D China said, “We are committed to continuous development of state-of-the art technologies and innovative solutions to satisfy the needs of our customers.  In fact AREVA T&D’s R&D investment in terms of percentage of sales ranks number one in the industry.  The company’s R&D investment in power transmission and distribution will have doubled in five years by 2010.  China with its considerable market size and growth potential is one of the key markets for AREVA.  Besides expanding R&D cooperation with leading universities, AREVA T&D also plans to set up a technology center in China.

Through the research collaboration between AREVA T&D and Tsinghua University since 2000, over 20 R&D projects have been completed and 8 projects are in progress. The R&D collaboration between corporations and universities will no doubt enhance the R&D standards of academic institutions.  Moreover, results of R&D can be commercialized more directly for application in the electric industry.

In Europe and North America, AREVA T&D’s R&D cooperation has been established with leading academic institutions such as Imperial College, University of Manchester, Strathclyde in the UK, SUPELEC in France, ETH in Switzerland, ETH and RWTH in Germany, Wroclaw University of Technology in Poland, University of Western Ontario in Canada to mention a few.
