Non-Conventional Instrument Transformers (IEC 61850-9.2)

Instrument transformers (ITs) are key components in the application of relays, meters and bay computers, to protect, measure, and control the operation of power networks. An accurate transformation of a secondary quantity is essential to feed substation IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices). For over a century, conventional wound current transformers (CTs), and wound or capacitor-coupled voltage transformers have been applied.

Conventional CTs and VTs, whilst optimized over time, still carry some compromises in their application. For 20 years, AREVA has pursued advanced research techniques to seek and industrialize solutions which negate the limitations of conventional ITs. These techniques have been nurtured and developed to ensure maximum reliability, availability, and safety. AREVA Non-Conventional Instrument Transformers have been proved in the laboratory, and are in-service in real substation applications Worldwide.

No longer is an iron-cored CT or VT design a given – the NCIT solution is fully- tested, proven, and ready for your order. AREVA T&D offers the full sphere of an NCIT offer, from non-conventional CTs and VTs, to merging units, to Ethernet switches, and protection relays. All devices are adapted to both air-insulated substations, and gas-insulated substations, available as discrete products, or turnkey scheme solutions.

Customer benefits

• Measurement accuracy, and protection dynamic range.
• No saturation, ferroresonance, nor unwanted transients.
• Safety: no risk of explosion, no wired CT secondary circuit.
• Cost reduction: compact CT and VT designs, avoidance of kilometres of substation wiring.
• The IEC 61850-9.2 digital substation.
• Short delivery lead times.
